TPD COMPLETES DRIVERS TRAINING
THOMASVILLE, GA – April 4, 2014 – Thomasville Police Department personnel recently completed an eight-hour defensive drivers’ training course designed to equip officers with the knowledge and skills that are needed to maneuver their vehicles during a host of different scenarios. The training opportunity was led for TPD training officer, Lieutenant Shane Harris.
Each year, TPD hold two rounds of continued drivers education and training in order to improve safety and reduce the occurrence of preventable accidents.
“The surprising reality is that the greatest threat law enforcement officers face today is their own patrol vehicles. Our officers always strive to achieve excellence in and out of their patrol vehicles,” said Police Chief Ellis Jackson. “The safety and security of our citizens, as well as our officers, will always be our top priority.”
Using the Easy Drift system – a polymer type ring which can be easily fit around standard patrol car tires – allows officers to simulate control issues usually experienced during high speed situations, at approximately 35 mph.
According to Lt. Harris, the training system used by the department allows for enhanced training in a safe and controlled environment.
“We can simulate high-speed dynamics at much lower speeds, in a much more controllable environment. As a result, we’ve been able to reduce our department’s at-fault accidents by over 50 percent over the last year and a half,” Harris said.
